Food Photography Portfolio

These are photos of food, all treats. Sometimes you don't realize how beautiful your food is, so that is what I was trying to do. Food photography is supposed to make the viewer's mouth water. I feel like I was able to do that pretty well.

In this portfolio, I used several techniques. The one that I mainly used was the Rule of thirds, but I also used backgrounds and lighting to help the food look more appealing.  In some photos, I used leading lines, color, perspective, angles, and slight framing.

With this project, I did have some challenges, mostly with lighting. I had difficulty with timing getting the pictures taken when there was good lighting and sometimes had a hard time getting the display to look right.

I am really happy with how these pictures turned out. Even though it was sometimes difficult, everything worked out in the end. These pictures were all taken with my short fixed lens.

Title: perfect cookie
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table right by a window
Description: This is a picture that I took around noon,I diffused the light and used a white canvas as a reflector.  I feel like the lighting in this picture is really good and the focus is right on. This picture follows the rule of thirds, lighting, and backgrounds. This photo had minimal photo editing done with it, I only fixed the lighting and contrast slightly.

Title: gooey on the inside
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table right by a window
Description: I took this picture around noon,  I diffused the light and used a white reflector so that the lighting wouldn't be too harsh. This picture follows the rule of thirds, has a shallow depth of field, and has a good background. I did a small amount of photo editing, I fixed the lighting and added a little contrast, but it looks almost the same as the original.

Title: picture perfect
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table right by a window
Description: I took this picture around noon, I didn't diffuse the light but I did use a white reflector. This picture follows the rule of thirds, has a good background, and was taken at an angle. I feel like the depth of field is perfect for this picture. I did a little editing on this photo, I just upped the lighting and contrast a little.

Title: Cookie dough
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table right by a window
Description: These pictures were all taken around 11:30 and under the same conditions. I used a white reflector. They all follow the rule of thirds and have good backgrounds. I love the shallow depth of field that can be seen in these pictures. I feel like these have good lighting and that they to some extent have a perspective. These were edited just a hair, I fixed the lighting and added a little contrast to each.

Title: Fancy waffle
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table right by a window
Description: This picture was taken in the morning without diffused light or a reflector. This picture follows the rule of thirds and uses leading lines. The fork on the plate slightly frames the waffle. This photo had a little bit of editing done, I upped the lighting and added some contrast.
Title: just a bite
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table right by a window
Description: This picture was taken in the morning with diffused light and a reflector.  This uses leading lines and follows the rule of thirds. The background is blurred so that the waffle can still be seen slightly(shallow depth of field), which gives the photo a unique perspective. On this picture, I did some editing to fix the lighting which was too bright, and I added contrast to give the photo more depth.

Title: Caramel cupcake
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table
Description: This photo was taken after it was dark. I used and overhead light fixture with a white canvas to diffuse the light. This picture follows the rule of thirds, has a good background, and has a shallow depth of field. The lighting in this picture wasn't the best so I fixed that in photoshop, fixed the color and gave it more contrast and shadows.

Title: after a bite or two
Location: This was taken at my kitchen table right by a window
Description: This picture was taken after it was dark outside, I diffused the light and used a cookie sheet as a reflector. This picture has a good background and a shallow depth of field. Having part of the cupcake eaten makes it look yummier, and the frosting on the ground adds to it. This picture was rather dark, so I fixed the light, color, and contrast in photoshop.
